Patient in Hope
A young couple promised their
four-year-old son that they would take him to the zoo. However, they did not
set a definite time or day for this zoo visit.
For the next week the little boy asked his parents each day if that
would be the day they would go to the zoo.
Each time he asked he was told, “Not today.” Another week passed, and then a month. As
time went by, the boy asked the question less frequently. The boy had almost given up all hope of going
to the zoo when his father announced one sunny Saturday morning, “We are going
to the zoo today.” You don’t have to stretch your imagination to understand how
excited the little boy was. His parents were finally going to make good on
their promise.
The believers in the early Christian
Church waited anxiously for the return of Jesus. They expected him to come back
during their lifetime. What joy filled their hearts as they waited for that day
to arrive! But he did not return during their time, or many generations of
believers to follow. Now that almost two thousand years have passed since Jesus
promised to return, our anticipation and excitement over his return may have
diminished.
What a spectacular day that will be!
Jesus himself will appear in full glory to take his own to be with him in
glory. Paul describes this event for us: “For the Lord himself will come down from
heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the
trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who
are still alive and are left will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet
the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore
encourage each other with these words.” I Thess. 4:16-18
No matter what your situation is in
life at this time, no matter what dark clouds try to block your vision and
steal the hope that God has put in your heart, cling to Jesus’ promise, and
look forward to the eternal joy which he has won for you!
