It’s Better to be Cautious…
Over the weekend, we had some workers in the building patching some leftover nail and screw holes in preparation for some final painting that needs to be done. While they were working in my classroom, I asked the worker about a hole up in the corner that he seemed to be avoiding. He said that he would have to ask his supervisor about it. He pointed out that there were some loose wires in the hole and that he wasn’t going to mess with the hole because of a previous experience.
It seems that while working on an earlier job he was patching a similar hole and the wires had made contact with a ring he was wearing and the electricity in those wires knocked him off of the ladder he was on. Now he had set his mind on not messing around with any loose wires. He said he had learned his lesson.
As we go through life, we have many lessons to learn. You have learned many of those lessons already. Some of these lessons are easy to learn and others can be learned in a painful way. As parents, we will want to help our children learn these lessons the easier way to save them from experiencing the painful lessons if possible. The greatest lessons our children need are those involving our relationship with our God because those lessons will last for eternity, as well as the consequences of not learning them.

Perfect Penmanship
One of the subjects that my students love to complain about is penmanship. Most of them have decent penmanship, a few have really outstanding handwriting skills. Some of them could do better if they wouldn’t try to rush through it and get it out of the way. To do a good job in their handwriting work all they have to do is follow the example in the book and duplicate it in their work.
In somewhat the same way, God expects us to copy his example perfectly. He says,” Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father, is perfect.” Matthew 5:48. God is our Creator and as such He can demand that we obey his will. He has laid out his divine will for us to follow. We only have to follow his perfect will and duplicate his example in order to stay on his good side. The problem is that we don’t follow through on his will, nor are we able to do it. In fact from the moment we entered this world, we were a failure in respect to God’s will. And there is nothing we can do to change the fact that we failed.
God knew the predicament we would be in even before he created all things. And he planned our redemption. He sent his own Son to do what we can’t do, live a perfect life. Then, he gave up his life to pay for our sins and remove our guilt. He rose from the grave to assure us that all is complete and heaven is God’s gift to all who believe.
We may not have perfect penmanship but in God’s eyes, we are perfect!

Be Self-Controlled
“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”
I Peter 5:8-9.
If you were a news reporter, what kind of news would be your ideal upon which to report? The trend seems to be toward the most shocking, the most worrisome, and the most sensational. Whether your medium is television, radio, or print you need to grab your audience’s attention. So it seems that every story becomes the most sensational and the most important thing that is happening.
Is that what Peter is doing here? Is he taking some minor problem and blowing it all out of proportion?
I would say that the answer to that question is “No!” Peter is warning us about a real and present danger, our enemy, the devil. This is our greatest enemy and he has one goal-to destroy our faith and trust in God. He may present himself to us like a small little kitty, innocent and harmless, but he is anything but innocent and harmless! He is that lion, always ready to pounce and devour.
But Peter reminds us that we can resist this enemy, we must. We can do this by standing firm in the faith, only in Christ. Our Lord will be with us as he is with all of his children around the world who are under attack from this enemy. Never underestimate the enemy and never discount the importance of our Savior’s strength.

An Epic Battle
By the time you read this it will all be over. The weeks of build-up, the predictions and prognostications, the hype and hyperbole, it will all be over. One team will have prevailed over the other. One person will be singled out as the MVP of the game and he will say that it was really a team effort. There may be some analysis done after, especially of the ‘mistakes’ made by one team that led to a turning point in the game. Names will be inscribed on trophies. And then what? What significance will there be to what has happened? What difference will it have made in the world?
If you want to talk about an epic battle, the most epic battle ever took place many years ago. It did not take place in an arena with thousands looking on though the outcome of this battle has effected every person who ever lived. This battle had thousands of years of build-up. Many people looked forward to this battle taking place without really understanding how it would all play out. Upon first examination of this battle it will seem that the champion of the people will have gone down in defeat. He will have laid down his life in this battle, seemingly having lost.
But Jesus’ death was not the end of the battle, he came back from that grave as the victor, he rose gloriously to his throne in heaven. He wears the victor’s crown and rules all things for the good of his people. His victory made a real difference in the lives of his people, and their futures.
