It Always Seems to Happen on One of the Coldest Days of the Year
If there is going to be a day when one of the cars belonging to someone in my household is going to need some sort of attention, it is going to happen on a day that is the coldest we have had in a while. Such was the case on Saturday.  My daughter told me that her car didn’t start on Friday morning. She was certain that it was not the battery because everything worked on the car except it wouldn’t turn over.  I thought to myself that if it were something more than a battery, it was not going to be fixed on Saturday.  It turned out to be a battery problem, it had reached the five year mark in its life and would no longer hold a charge. The cold weather just hastened the inevitable demise of the battery. A dead battery does nothing to start our cars.
In our lives, our engines are dead from the beginning, and we have nothing to get us started in our life with God. God needs to act upon us to start that life within us. Through His Word and Spirit, He installs faith in our hearts to believe the promises He makes to us. Through this faith, He gives us the ability to work for Him and produce works that honor Him. This battery of faith needs to be regularly recharged and maintained through the application of the Word and Sacrament throughout our life here on earth. Unlike the battery in our cars, our faith battery doesn’t have a warranty that runs out just when you most need it. It will take you all the way to eternity.

Bible Information Class
A child’s Christian education is only as good as the cooperation between parents and teachers.  To this end, we feel strongly that all parents need to hear our fundamental beliefs and understand the basic doctrines that all of our school children are taught.  Therefore, we invite parents of school children to attend Pastor Ewing’s “Making Life Better Class” that continues tonight, January 29.
This class is an extensive review of the basic doctrines taught in the Bible and, therefore, in this school.  Parents who complete the class will receive a $500 discount on their child’s tuition for each of three years after completing the class.

The Dome
Preschool and FLS students will be going to the Dome tomorrow, January 30th from 10:00-12:00 pm. Students are not allowed to wear shorts, however, they may wear athletic pants or sweat pants.  Please bring sneakers to play on the field, and car seats if your student needs to be in one.
If you have volunteered to help, please be at the school by 9:30 a.m.

Library Visit
The Kindergarten and 5th-8th grade classes will be visiting the library this Friday, February 2nd.  If you have any questions, please speak with your student’s teacher.

Volleyball Games
The volleyball team will play games again at Lumen Christi on February 2nd from 4:00 – 8:00pm.

Underwater Adventure
Toddlers to 10 year olds and their parents are invited to an underwater adventure Saturday, February 3rd, from 10:00 to noon. Come enjoy crafts, activities, snacks and a devotion all focused on the wonderful world God created underwater.
Please contact Melissa Mittelstadt at FaithLutheranPreschoolAK@gmail.com for more information or to help with the event.

Junior Choir
Junior choir will be singing during the 10:30 am services on February 4th at Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River.  If you will be riding there with Mrs. Gillespie, please meet in Faith’s parking lot by 9:40 am.  Otherwise, please be at Peace by 10:10am.

PTF Meeting
We invite all parents and friends to join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, February 7th at 6:00pm.  Topics for discussion include plans for the chicken dinner fundraiser, for the health fair, and for events during the remainder of the school year.

Mission Presentation
On Wednesday, February 14th, Anne Press, director of the Medical Mission to Southeast Asia, will be here to tell us about the work being carried out in that area of the world.  Her presentation will be in the sanctuary at 10:30A.M.  All of you are invited to join us.

Chicken Fundraiser Dinner
On Friday, February 23rd, PTF will host a Chicken Fundraiser Dinner to fund our new basketball goals.  It will begin at 6:00pm and will be a free will donation.  The menu will be chicken with sides of pasta, fresh vegetables, Olive Garden Salad and breadsticks.  We will have dessert and drinks as well.
We look forward to seeing you there for fellowship and a great meal.

Tardiness/Absences
Classes start promptly at 8:30.  Students who miss the start of the school day often feel rushed and can become unfocused and stressed for the day.  Please make every effort to have your student to school on time.  This means adequate planning, especially on days with inclement weather.
If your child will be absent from school, contact the school before 8:30.  Please make every effort to collect your child’s assignments on that day so the missed assignments may be completed at home.
For planned early dismissals and absences, send a written note in advance of the absence.  Children often forget to inform their teachers or do not remember the details.
Please make school as important to your child as work is important to you, even in the primary grades.  Tardiness and absences though sometimes necessary, are frustrating and stressful to students, teachers, and the classroom as a whole.  Frivolous excuses for tardiness and absences can teach children their educational responsibilities aren’t important and can be detrimental to the value they place on education in the future.  Please act in the best interest of your child in this regard.

February Birthdays
God’s blessings on your birthday and throughout the year.
Olivia Z. – February 6
Elijah E. – February 10
Sean T. – February 28

Do I Know How to Pray?
“Of course!” I might answer. “I’ve been praying since I sat on my mother’s lap.” But what is prayer?
Prayer is a blessed privilege God gives only to his believers. Only his dear children have been told to pray. He invites us, His dear children, to crawl up into His lap in prayer.  Sometimes we don’t even know what we need to pray about and we just crawl up there and weep on His shoulder. We find comfort as He wraps His arms around us and reassures us that He has everything under His control.
Now certainly, none of us deserve any of the things for which we ask from our God.  I’ll do well to remember that I am a beggar at God’s door. Only with Jesus at my side dare I knock at the heavenly Father’s door. When He answers the door, Jesus will tell the Father to answer this prayer, not because of me, the sinner, but because of Him, the Savior. Because of Jesus, I can go boldly to the Father.  Yet, I will go humbly into His presence with thanksgiving for giving me Jesus to carry my sins and pay for them, giving me the opportunity to come to my heavenly Father.
Lord, teach us to pray humbly relying on your love for me in Jesus. Amen.

Parent Connection January 16

What Do You Want?
It started somewhat hesitantly. Jesus saw a couple of John the Baptist’s disciples following him. He turned and asked them, “What do you want?” They answered with a question of their own, “Where are you staying?” Is that really what they wanted? I don’t know, but Jesus knew and told them to, “Come and see.”
What would my answer be if Jesus had asked me that question? Would it be for pardon for my sins and peace with my God? Maybe it would be help to resist temptations, or comfort for those loved ones who are suffering pain of illness? Maybe it would be comfort at that open grave, either of a loved one or even my own?
Whatever my answer to his question, I know what he would say to me! He would invite me to “Come and see.” In his Word, he invites all of us to come and see his answer to every one of my problems. He assures us that there is nothing for which he has not supplied the answer. Every want, need, pain, or sorrow is taken care of through our Lord and Savior. Let us take it to the Lord in prayer! He promises to listen and respond in the way that he knows is best for us.

A Light to Enlighten the Gentiles
If I had to give up one of my senses for the rest of my life here on earth, I might have a hard time deciding which one to choose. But I know that I would not want to give up my sight. I think it would be extremely hard to have lived most of your life with sight and then, as you age, to have your sight slowly decline and fail. You can imagine how frustrating and confusing that could be. You might still be able to see light and dark but you have to try to guess at what you are seeing, that fuzzy shape, that ghostly outline.
We are in the season of Epiphany, the celebration of the “revealing” of the Savior of the world to the Gentiles. For thousands of years, the promise of the Savior was passed down in the families of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But He was never just the Savior of the Hebrews. Simeon proclaimed in the Temple that this Child would be “A Light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.” Jesus came to bring the Light of salvation to those living in the darkness of sin, both Hebrews and Gentiles. Jesus came to give His Light to us! May we live in that Light throughout the new year!
