Parent Connection March 26

The Resurrection
This is Holy Week. We don’t call it Holy Week because it is better or more perfect than any other week. We call it Holy Week because of the holiness of our Savior and what He did for us during this week some 2,000 years ago.
Our celebration of Holy Week began yesterday with our remembrance of Jesus’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. The people welcomed Jesus as the Messiah, the One promised to save them. Many of them had the wrong idea about this Messiah and from what He would save them. They thought He would rid them of the hated Roman rule. He really came to save them and all people from their sins and their slavery to Satan.
Later in that week, Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Holy Communion, that Holy Supper where He gives us His body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine as a concrete evidence of the forgiveness of sins that is offered to us in the Sacrament.
He purchased this forgiveness of sins for us by offering His life blood on the altar of the cross, once for all. His life was the payment, the only possible payment, precious enough to cancel out the guilt of the sins of the whole world. When Jesus cried out, “It is finished!” He meant that the payment for all sins was complete. Then he gave up his life willingly.
Then came the event that is above all the others. If this event never happened, all of the other events would have been rendered utterly useless. Paul tells the Corinthians in chapter 15 of his first letter to them, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” We are pleased to celebrate Christ’s resurrection because our salvation is certain since Christ was raised from the dead. God placed His stamp of approval on Jesus’ work by raising Him from the dead.

Thoughts of Spring
I don’t know about you, but the weather is starting to get to me. This morning I woke up from dreaming about some springtime activities. It is way too early to be thinking about planting the garden and mowing the lawn. It may not be too early to think about fishing, but just because the temperature has been above freezing and the snow piles are starting to yield their hold on the parking area, it doesn’t mean that it is spring. Even though the calendar says that tomorrow is the first day of spring, from experience, I can assure you that you should look for a few more weeks of winter weather (like about six more). I don’t want anyone to be disappointed when the flakes continue to fall.
Thoughts of springtime do bring to mind a hope that each of us has, one that will never be a disappointment. Springtime is a time of new life, and reminds us of the new life that is ours as a blessing of the faith we have been given. We experience this new life as we make our way through our daily activities even though we may face trials and troubles of many kinds. We will experience this new life fully when our Savior returns to take us to our eternal home. This new life can never disappoint us!

Sometimes the Best-Laid Plans…
For Bible class yesterday, Pastor Ewings asked us to think of the most encouraging passage from Scriptures. There are so many good passages to pick from so it’s hard to choose. Later in the class, I thought of another comforting passage.
It comes from the book of Jeremiah who wrote to the people of Judah about the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the captivity in Babylon. This judgment was coming on them because of their unfaithfulness to their God. They were turning to other gods so this punishment was deserved. But even in the declaration of the judgment headed their way, God holds out hope for those who belonged to Him. He tells them that their captivity would be seventy years and then He would bring them back to the land promised to the Patriarchs.
Then the Prophet writes these encouraging words to the exiles, and us:  “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah 29:11.
What greater comfort and encouragement could there be for us, God has plans for us. He is not finished with us. He will never abandon us, he has a future for us, a hope we can always look forward to, even if our eyesight might be blurred by tears. He has promised to wipe away all of our tears, and calm our fears. His are the “best-laid plans” and his plans can never fail.

Grades K-8 will be going to the YMCA tomorrow, Tuesday, March 6th, for their last visit this year.
