Sometimes the Best-Laid Plans…
For Bible class yesterday, Pastor
Ewings asked us to think of the most encouraging passage from Scriptures. There
are so many good passages to pick from so it’s hard to choose. Later in the
class, I thought of another comforting passage.
It comes from the book of Jeremiah who
wrote to the people of Judah about the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the
captivity in Babylon. This judgment was coming on them because of their
unfaithfulness to their God. They were turning to other gods so this punishment
was deserved. But even in the declaration of the judgment headed their way, God
holds out hope for those who belonged to Him. He tells them that their
captivity would be seventy years and then He would bring them back to the land
promised to the Patriarchs.
Then the Prophet writes these
encouraging words to the exiles, and us:
“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to
prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” Jeremiah
29:11.
What
greater comfort and encouragement could there be for us, God has plans for us.
He is not finished with us. He will never abandon us, he has a future for us, a
hope we can always look forward to, even if our eyesight might be blurred by
tears. He has promised to wipe away all of our tears, and calm our fears. His
are the “best-laid plans” and his plans can never fail.
