The Resurrection
This
is Holy Week. We don’t call it Holy Week because it is better or more perfect
than any other week. We call it Holy Week because of the holiness of our Savior
and what He did for us during this week some 2,000 years ago.
Our celebration of Holy Week began yesterday
with our remembrance of Jesus’s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. The people
welcomed Jesus as the Messiah, the One promised to save them. Many of them had
the wrong idea about this Messiah and from what He would save them. They
thought He would rid them of the hated Roman rule. He really came to save them
and all people from their sins and their slavery to Satan.
Later in that week, Jesus instituted
the Sacrament of Holy Communion, that Holy Supper where He gives us His body
and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine as a concrete evidence of the
forgiveness of sins that is offered to us in the Sacrament.
He purchased this forgiveness of sins
for us by offering His life blood on the altar of the cross, once for all. His
life was the payment, the only possible payment, precious enough to cancel out
the guilt of the sins of the whole world. When Jesus cried out, “It is
finished!” He meant that the payment for all sins was complete. Then he gave up
his life willingly.
Then came the event that is above all
the others. If this event never happened, all of the other events would have
been rendered utterly useless. Paul tells the Corinthians in chapter 15 of his
first letter to them, “If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you
are still in your sins.” We are pleased to celebrate Christ’s resurrection
because our salvation
is certain since Christ was raised from the dead. God placed His stamp of
approval on Jesus’ work by raising Him from the dead.
