A Light to Enlighten the Gentiles
If I had to give up one of my senses for the rest of my life here on earth, I might have a hard time deciding which one to choose. But I know that I would not want to give up my sight. I think it would be extremely hard to have lived most of your life with sight and then, as you age, to have your sight slowly decline and fail. You can imagine how frustrating and confusing that could be. You might still be able to see light and dark but you have to try to guess at what you are seeing, that fuzzy shape, that ghostly outline.
We are in the season of Epiphany, the celebration of the “revealing” of the Savior of the world to the Gentiles. For thousands of years, the promise of the Savior was passed down in the families of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But He was never just the Savior of the Hebrews. Simeon proclaimed in the Temple that this Child would be “A Light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of your people Israel.” Jesus came to bring the Light of salvation to those living in the darkness of sin, both Hebrews and Gentiles. Jesus came to give His Light to us! May we live in that Light throughout the new year!
